Solar PV panels

Solar PV panels can generate electricity for your home.

Solar PV can generate electricity for almost any home

Solar PV (solar photovoltaic panels) can be installed on your roof and supply enough electricity to power a home all year round.

With the government announcing a series of incentives to those who use solar PV, now is the time to switch to solar PV to generate a clean, efficient source of renewable energy.

How does solar PV work?

The solar PV systems use photovoltaic cells which are capable of converting light into an electronic current. The PV cells take energy emmitted from the sun and turn it electricity, meaning the electricity can be generated even when the sun is not shining directly on them.

Upon converting the sun’s energy into electricity, it then needs to be converted from DC into AC in order to be used within the home. An device called an inverter is used with solar PV panels for this conversion, and the resulting electricity is then chanelled into the home to power everyday objects such as lights, TVs, kettles (and anything else you may have), directly from the socket. No modifications to your appliances are needed.

  • Investment opportunity with a great return
  • Reliable and zero maintenance
  • Electricity all year round

Will my home be suitable for solar PV panels?

You will need to own the property and have roof space that is not overshadowed by trees or buildings and faces within 90 degrees of south. Solar PV panels can still be installed where the roof is partly overshadowed during certains of the day, however less energy may be generated as a result.

In the majority of cases, planning permission to install solar PV panels is not necessary. However, if your building is listed or within a conservation area, advice should be sought from your local authority before installation.

How much electricity could I generate from photovoltaic panels?

Depending on the area available to install the panels (i.e. the size of your roof space), solar PV panels should generate enough electricity to

  • Installing solar panels on your roof can range from £8000 – £12000 depending on location, property and requirements.
  • A roof that faces within 90 degrees south which is not overshadowed by trees or other buildings.
  • A roof strong enough to support the weight of solar panels.
  • Planning permission is not usually required unless in a conservation area (excluding Wales and Northern Ireland).

power around 40%-60% of electricity consumption of your home – saving your hundreds of pounds every year.

What costs are involved for installing solar panels?

This can depend on the size of the property, whether it forms part of the roof, and how much energy is needed from the system.

A typical domestic solar PV installation would cost between £8,000 – £15,000. The return on investment would typically be around 9% return, with most electricity requirements catered for, and with any excess sold back to the national grid for an additional premium under the solar feed in tariff (solar FITs) scheme.
