Feed in Tariffs

Solar feed in tariffs pay you to generate green energy.

Solar PV can generate electricity for almost any home

Feed in tariffs pay homeowners and businesses for generating their own electricity through low-carbon means.

Anyone generating their own electricity using solar technology is eligible to receive 41.3p for every kw/h generated under the feed in tariff scheme.

Solar feed in tariff: a quick guide

The electricity produced can be used within the home or feed it back into the national grid. A typical household could generate an around £950 a year through the use of solar panels and feed in tariffs.

Feed in tariffs are guaranteed for 25 years after installing a solar PV system in your home. This effectively ensures that the cost of installing the system should generate a return of 9%, and pay for itself 2-3 times during the lifetime of the tariffs.

Snapshot: savings and payments:

  • £950 a year earned (on average) from using energy generated from solar PV
  • 9% return on investment
  • £150 saved each year from your energy bill
  • Use energy within your home or export back to the grid – get paid for both
  • Average payback within 7 years
  • Property more desirable and increased in value

Your installer will notify the appropriate energy company for you. They will then send you information on setting up your tariff.

Who pays me for the energy I generate?

Feed in tariffs are backed by the government and governed by law. However, it is energy companies who will pay you for the energy you generate and use. This helps to ensure targets for reducing dependance of fossil fuels is reduced by 20% by 2020.

For the majority of cases, your current energy supplier will simply discount the energy generated from your solar system against any energy you’ve used from them (if your system cannot produce enough energy to cover your needs). This will either leave a significantly discounted payment, or will result in a payment made to you by the energy company – and don’t forget, this payment is completely tax free!

Feed in tariff rate

Size of system Earning (p/kwh)
<4kW (new build) 36.1p
<4kW (retrofit) 41.3p
4 – 10kW 36.1p
10 – 100kW 31.4p
100kW – 5MW 29.3p
Off Grid Systems 29.3p

How it works: a quick overview

The feed in tariff is paid based on the renewable energy you generate, irrespective of whether this is fed back into the grid or used within your property.

Energy companies (backed by the Government) will pay you around 41.3p per kw/h you produce (and use) yourself. An additional 3p per k/wh is paid on top of this when feeding any excess back into the grid. The tariff guarantees payments on solar PV tariffs for 25 years. The initial cost of install solar panels will be paid back two to three times during this 25 period.
